After the news broke that Lee Child had sold the rights to his books to Tom Cruise’s production company and that Tom Cruise intended to play the part of Reacher, I toyed with the idea of never reading another Reacher book. How could Child betray his legion of fans in such a cruel way? There is no way Cruise could play Reacher - as someone said on my radio show, Prince Charles would be a better candidate. But who was I kidding? The moment his latest work arrived by courier I was devouring it and I’d have to say Child is back to his best. The Affair is a prequel - and explains how and why Reacher came to be the itinerant harbinger of justice that we’ve come to know and love. It’s a more complex read than his latest works and all the better for it. I loved it - but I still haven’t forgiven Lee for the Tom Cruise decision.

I too was shocked to hear that Tom Cruise has been signed to play Jack Reacher! He just doesn't seem to fit the part! I have only just started reading Lee Child books, have read the first 3 so far but am totally hooked!

Loved it too! not much else got done in the house until it was done! I agree with Kerre, I can NOT imagine Tom Cruise playing Reacher, the image I have is a tall man for a start. Good read.

As soon as I read Tom Cruise etc, I felt exactly the same as your comments - Don't think I'll read another Lee Child Reacher book - shame to align Reacher with that particular actor, though he could prove me wrong. Perhaps I should reserve judgement. Your comments later in your review were encouraging, so perhaps I should read the latest edition after all.

:) I did think about boycotting as well, but who was I kidding. Tome Cruise?? Honestly? I think the perfect Jack Reacher is the actor on Person of Interest. Okay, off to get the book!

I don't think it would put me off reading the book, not sure who I think could play Jack Reacher. It would be good to read his backstory.

I love Lee Child's books but I agree that I really can't see Tom Cruise depicting the part of Jack.

The Affair

How great to get the backstory on Jack Reacher. An absolute page turner of a book.Fast moving action with the usual twists and turns and a bit of love interest as well. Highly recommended.
