The Mothers' Group tells the story of six very different women who agree to regularly meet soon after the births of their babies. Set during the first crucial year of their babies' lives, The Mothers' Group tracks the women's individual journeys - and the group's collective one - as they navigate birth and motherhood as well as the shifting ground of their relationships with their partners. Each woman strives in her own way to become the mother she wants to be, and finds herself becoming increasingly reliant on the friendship and support of the members of the mothers' group. Until one day an unthinkably shocking event changes everything, testing their bonds and revealing closely held secrets that threaten to shatter their lives. The Mothers' Group is an unflinching and compelling portrait of the modern family in all its complexity and intensity: love, sex and marriage and all the joys and tensions of raising children in an increasingly complicated world.

Kerre's Choice

7 May 2012, 1:02pm | Review by Kerre Woodham
The construct is a little formulaic - six mothers, six very different women, drawn together only because they are first time mothers Ė and, on occasion, you have to suspend belief, but this is nonetheless a very readable story about the first year of a motherís life and how once that baby arrives, everything changes. We follow the different women as they comes to terms with being a parent, going back to work, dealing with step children and maintaining their relationships with their partners. I read it in one go, right through to the shocking climax and itís all the publishers promise - moving, provocative and gripping. Highly readable.

The Mothers group

18 May 2012, 2:25pm | Review by Lesley Burns
When I first picked up this book I wondered if it would be my type of book. I soon forget any preconceived ideas as each character appeared and I joined them in their everyday lives. The variety of people, lifestyles and situations were quite believable and also brought out varied possible situations of parents and mothers lives.
All of this was bound together by the support group they attended and I certainly was made to think differently about a Mothers situation and experience.
It became an intriguing read and I couldn't put it down towards the end. A great read for all women and probably some Dads too.

The Mother's Group

15 May 2012, 9:10pm | Review by Karen Stewart
Like Kerre, I read this book in one day, Mother's Day. I found the style flowed well and you got more background about each character as the first person narrative changed. Each set of parents had flaws that the other couples couldn't see at first and it was a little like a putting together a puzzle piece by piece. It really took me back to the first year's of my boys lives and the memory of labour. I don't think I would recommend it to new mother's but ones who have had their children a while ago. Well worth reading and a worthy title to be a Kerre's Choice book.
