Oh thank heavens for Wendyl Nissen! In these days of celebrity mothers who bounce back into size 6 jeans before their stitches have healed and fertility fascists who lecture mothers to be about pregnancy, breast feeding and sleep routines, Wendyl Nissen is the voice of reason, common sense and kindness. The only thing she’s firm about is keeping your baby away from completely unnecessary chemicals. She offers home made remedies and helpful sensible advice to all young mums - above all, forget about striving for perfection. This book is like having the perfect grandmother with you at all times and should be required reading for every mother to be. Brilliant.

This book looks great. I'm into common sense and reason. Definately putting it on my list of must-reads. Thanks Kerre!

What I great gift for a new mum!
21 Sep 2011 15:57:02 | Louise Maginness

Sounds like a great book to have. What age baby/child is the advice in this book most suitable for?
21 Sep 2011 16:47:10 | Michelle Perry

What a fantastic sounding book - got the perfect person to give this to for Christmas

A great review Kerre, yes, thank heavens for Wendyl Nissen who's bucked the modern trends and given new mums the courage to find out for themselves whats best for her and her baby.

My mum just gave me this book and I've started reading it, it's fantastic! So informative and fascinating.
21 Sep 2011 20:21:43 | Hayley Mansell

I bought this book today for my DIL who is having a baby. I started reading it and decided I wanted to keep it for myself so had to go and buy another one for her! Great read and so practical and down to earth.
21 Sep 2011 21:49:05 | Janet Baldwin

What a informative read for any new mums.
22 Sep 2011 06:21:54 | Rea Nailer

It's about time somebody gave some good all round advice to new Mums
22 Sep 2011 10:20:31 | Julie Hart

Brilliant - I'll be sharing this book for its 'reason, common sense and kindness' - something supportive and affirming for a change instead of the constant pushing and straining towards unrealistic standards of 'perfection' that only erode a young mum's confidence.
22 Sep 2011 10:31:44 | Marian Kerr

I have a brand new great granddaughter, her Mum will be getting this book ASAP, needs some good plain sense, instead of some of the stuff her head is getting filled with.
22 Sep 2011 16:32:32 | Cherie Lochead

Definitely want this book! I feel like we've gone overboard with the products we put on babies (and our own) skin ... and the ones we eat, inhale, use etc.
22 Sep 2011 16:48:07 | Erin Parkinson

I'd be lost without Wendyl in my quest to simplify my cleaning products and get rid of all the commercial toxin laden cleansers around, not so sure about whether commercial beauty products have too many toxins, but can recommend Wendyl's natural beauty aids :-) Gave all three Children Wendyl's Green Goddess Book last Christmas, and this book is what they are getting this Christmas

I sure wish this book was around when my daughter was growing up, it would have helped a lot also with our grandchildren.
23 Sep 2011 08:41:56 | Cheryl Hewitt

I will be going in for a look at this book. It sounds perfect. I don't like baby wipes, never have, but didn't know they have a substance which is banned in products that are inhaled. I learned something new just in reading the review! I will definitely buy this book for my daughter.
23 Sep 2011 21:47:15 | Sheryl Bennett

Wendyl seems like a smart lady, I enjoy listening to her on the radio. You have piqued my interest in this book now!
24 Sep 2011 21:53:02 | Anneke Grant

This book would make a great gift for a new mother!
28 Sep 2011 15:52:01 | Vicki Olsen

Kiaorara! At last someone of Wendyl's stature validating good old-fashioned commonsense practices that have been proven successful over decades from our Mums, Nannies and beyond! I'd recommend this book unreservedly if only to help new (and not so young) Mums inundated with 'must-haves' and 'only right ones/way' that often confuse and intimidate persons wanting to be the best Mum they can. - P.S. for nappy rash - the jelly at the base of the flax spears mixed with boiled water is MAGIC ;works every time!- from one who used it on 5 children, 26 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren...... GO WENDYL/KERRE GO!!....
29 Sep 2011 09:58:49 | Julie Lawson

The "perfect grandmother" certainly portrays the warmth of this book!
30 Nov 2011 15:17:45 | Karleena Sunderland

What a fantastic book from Wendyl. I hope someone gets this for my xmas stocking! Hint hint ...
07 Dec 2011 21:21:28 | Fiona Lemon

Sounds like this would make an excellent baby shower gift! Might have to look into getting myself a copy too
10 Feb 2012 14:41:18 | Liz Milner

There's something to be said for the old fashioned approach. Yay for Wendyl. Looks like a great read.
10 Feb 2012 17:04:20 | Emily Carter

Great review which is totally true to the book. I really enjoyed the read and now make Wendyls washing powder to wash my bubs nappies in!
14 Mar 2012 15:11:41 | Jess Gabbie

Thanks Kerre, it's good to know that this is a realistic view of motherhood and gives useful advice (from a real Mum)
11 Apr 2012 09:20:42 | Katherine Taylor

Excellent "recipes" - no chemical cleaners have worked as well in my bathroom as Wendyl's concoctions.
11 Apr 2012 18:00:52 | Penny Meredith

An excellent book - thoroughly recommended!
25 May 2012 16:37:50 | Vicki Olsen

Sounds like another great book by Wendyl
05 Nov 2014 15:08:34 | Tina Hume

OMG sounds like the kind of book every new mum should be given as part of a care package when leaving the maternity ward!
05 Nov 2014 18:35:49 | Anna Vincent

I wish Wendyl was my neighbour - no end of practical advice for all aspects of life - living cleaner and greener and healthier. She\'s a national treasure!

Foundation knowledge

Just what every new mother should be given. Better still high schools could provide them as part of their curriculum, image the foundation it would provide our children.

Back to basics

An insightful read that has very much made me question a lot of the products I use around the house and on my skin. My one hesitation is some of the 'recipe's' given include products that might take a bit of hunting down. Well worth the time though!

As always Wendyl talks a lot of common sense.. her recipes are cheap and non-toxic.. I will be picking one her books for Christmas to give to my Daughters-in-Law.. hopefully to get them to use non-chemical cleaners while they have young children around them. A wizard - thats what she is!

Mother's Little Helper! Why did this title make me want to read further?? God forbid I will ever need the help myself, but after reading your review I would definitely tell a young Mum to BUY AND READ!! We all need help at some time.........................50 years ago my firstborn arrived with Downs. In those days everything went to time and routine..............not a bad thing, but with two other little boys arriving soon after the first, my days - and nights, were soul destroying at times cos I always felt that maybe I wasn't quite up to scratch!! Who the hell cares?? As long as they are feed, changed and WELL LOVED, life goes on. (We did have an ANGEL grandmother on hand though). And they have all three grown to be Sons to be proud of. :-)
