This is an astonishingly accomplished debut novel that explores male friendships - bromances if you will - and the power of sport in transforming peoples lives, for better and for worse. The story centres around Henry, a brilliantly talented baseball fielder who is taken under the massive and kindly wing of Mike Schwartz, the team captain and the man who will lead Henry from his working class roots into a prestigious college and then onto major league glory. Interwoven through the central narrative are the stories of Owen, Henry’s beautiful gay roommate; Guert, the college president and Pella, his wilful headstrong daughter. A lovely book, and if you like John Irving’s novels - The World According to Garp, for example or Cider House Rules, this is the one for you.
