Ebenezer Howard's To-Morrow is deservedly the most famous single publication in the history of modern town planning. Published in 1898, it was repeatedly republished under its more familiar title Garden Cities of To-Morrow , and translated into many other languages. Howard founded the Garden City Association, today the Town and Country Planning Association, in 1899; it generated a movement that spawned garden cities and garden suburbs in countries as diverse as France and Argentina, Germany and Japan, Russia and the United States. In its homeland, it led to the construction of nearly thirty government-financed new towns after World War Two, including examples as notable as Stevenage, Harlow and Milton Keynes. Yet To-Morrow has never since been published in its original form Now, to celebrate the centenary of the first garden city at Letchworth, the Town and Country Planning Association has performed a service to planners everywhere by initiating the republication in facsimile form of the very scarce original first edition of To-Morrow .
Accompanied by a running scholarly commentary on the text, and by a newly-written editorial introduction and postscript, jointly written by three leading commentators on Howard's life and work To-Morrow will immediately become a compulsory purchase for every serious student and practitioner of planning and for teachers and students of modern social, economic and political history.
