Oh, yeah! If you like inter-generational, sprawling and sumptuous yarns, this is the book for you. It tells the story of the three families who founded the fiction town of Howbutker back in 1830s America. The Tolivers are cotton farmers, the Warwick’s mill lumber and the duMonts have retail stores. Knowing that she’s dying, Mary Toliver du Mont changes her will, preventing her great niece Rachel from inheriting Somerset, the plantation that Mary and Rachel love with every fibre of their beings. When her lawyer remonstrates with Mary, she is adamant that by denying Rachel Somerset, she will be allowing Rachel to avoid the curse of the Tolivers and find happiness. And thus the story begins in the present day, goes back into the past before we’re back to the present again and the ends are tied together in a satisfying finish. Imagine Gone with the Wind crossed with Dallas. It’s all rather marvellous despite the odd minor flaw you get with 600 page epics. Grab the chocolates, nestle in and start reading.
