This is a brilliantly observed novel of family secrets, of love and loyalty, and of what makes up a family.

Perhaps you recognise the name and that would be right, Graham Norton is one of the UK’s best loved broadcasters hosting The Graham Norton Show and on BBC radio. But, he’s turned his hand to writing and this is his second novel. Last year he released Holding with successful sales and reviews. Staff member Karen recently read A Keeper and gives us her review: “Being a fan of Graham Norton, I was interested to see if he could actually write fiction– and he can! I really enjoyed the way he wove the present time and past. I’m not usually a fan of this style as I tend to get a bit lost, but this was easy to follow and I found myself immersed in the story, discovering Elizabeth’s past alongside her. Elizabeth is the main character, who returns to Ireland from her life in New York, to tidy up loose ends, following her mother’s death. She had never felt that close or treasured by her mother but, it is back in Ireland that she discovers the truth about their life and the sacrifices her mother made to protect her from an uncomfortable truth. Norton has a way with words that sets the scene, enabling you to visualise this Irish experience and the hardships that Patricia (Elizabeth’s mother) endured. I found the book nostalgic and really enjoyed it which surprised this reader of non-fiction!
