Keeping it Real

What a pleasing surprise to see the “before” and “after” photographs in this book. We are so used to seeing the “after” pictures in these situations being the skinny, ultra-toned body but Makaia Carr reverses the trend and her “after” photo looks, as she says in her book, “real”. Here is a woman who has faced challenges in her life and overcome them, and who clearly understands that who you are, not what you look like, is the most important thing.

Keeping it Real

Makaia Carr is a New Zealand inspirational blogger – sharing thoughts from her life, the struggles and strategies to help maintain positive body image and personal perspective. She likes to remind us that if we are to be on a pathway of health and wellbeing then it starts with selfacceptance. “Self-loathing is imprisonment; self-love is liberation” is one of her key quotes and she’s earnt the place to comment as she has overcome her own obstacles of life. At 16 years old Makaia left school, pregnant with her first child and described herself as a ‘Maori teen mum from the Naki’. She knew where others expected her to end up but she defied the odds and prospered. From self-destructive behaviour to an understanding of mental wellbeing and dealing with parental marriage breakdown and abuse from ‘a trusted circle’. Makaia has essential skills and strategies to help, coach and inspire young women. Getting into serious exercise, eating ‘clean’ and determination helped Makaia launch her social media presence which morphed into ‘Motivate Me’ and the active fashion range M-Fit. This is a powerful story and full of ideas to kickstart your physical, mental and emotional health. She is greatly skilled in her understanding of business and has mastered the art of self-care to create a vibrant, energetic productive life – you can salute that!
