Through My Eyes – Natural Disaster Zones is a series that provides young readers with thoughtful insight to disaster zones that have been real and recent events around the world. the series highlights the problems and difficulties children face and the personal impact on their lives. the fictionalised format gives the reader an empathy for those facing challenges in tragedy. Lyla’s story is set in and around the 22nd February 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Lyla is a college age-student, her mum is a police officer and her dad is a trauma nurse in the emergency section of the Christchurch hospital. With devastation all around, Lyla struggles in shock to locate her parents, brother and friends. Familiar landmarks and places have changed in a matter of minutes and the story captures the coming together of community to respond, clean up, grieve and try to make sense of their new reality. Written by the exceptional author Fleur beale this is a very powerful teaching tool but also a series perfect for the young reader who prefers a story ‘based in reality’. Very timely as we have just passed the seventh anniversary of this momentous new Zealand event – one that we can all recall ‘where we were at the time’... suitable for the reader aged 10+
