Pacific

It is 250 years since Captain James Cook set sail from the northern hemisphere on a scientifi c journey that turned into the fi rst circumnavigation of New Zealand and exploration of the Pacifi c Ocean. Pacifi c is the accompanying book to a new television series due soon on Prime TV. The series will be called Unchartered and is a six part series hosted by New Zealand actor Sam Neill. “In 1768 the vast waters of the Pacifi c had not been mapped by European explorers but they were not unknown. A diversity of people and cultures had navigated, traded, lived and fought in this region. Before Cook, the Pacifi c was disconnected from the power and ideas of Europe, Asia and America but in the wake of Cook’s explorations everything changed.” Sam Neill followed the travels undertaken by Cook, Banks and crew to gain an understanding of the navigator but also to understand the people, culture and civilisation in its complete context – not just the eyes of a Northern European. “We are looking at Cook but we are looking at the before and after Cook. We are the people of the Pacifi c and this is our story as well” says Neill. Perfect gift for Father’s Day on 2nd September.
