A breathtaking debut about love and war, and the battle to save a precious legacy

Each lace shawl begins and ends the same way – with a circle. Everything is connected with a thread as fine as gossamer, each life affected by what has come before it and what will come after.

1941, Estonia. As Stalin’s brutal Red Army crushes everything in its path, Katarina and her family survive only because their precious farm produce is needed to feed the occupying forces.

Fiercely partisan, Katarina battles to protect her grandmother’s precious legacy – the weaving of gossamer lace shawls stitched with intricate patterns that tell the stories passed down through generations.

Lace Weaver

This is perfect for Mother’s Day coming up! I love historical fi ction as you learn so much about different times and different eras. Lace Weaver is set in the Baltic nation of Estonia in 1941. Katerina is young and holds the stories and skills that are woven into the Estonian lace shawls. She knows the meaning and techniques gifted to her from her grandmother to preserve fables and family lineage. This is especially important in perilous times as Stalin’s Russian soldiers have taken Estonia’s freedom. The brutal and harsh regime has denied Estonia its culture, land produce and heritage but Katerina uses her circle of lace shawl knitters to keep the bonds of community strong. Thousands of kilometres away in Moscow, Lydia lives a life under the watchful eye of a cruel dictator. Upon learning tragic family truths, Lydia fl ees to Estonia where she has family links and this is where Lydia and Katerina meet. The two young women are vastly different and clash but this is not a time to hold bitter grudges – instead, it is a time to forge bonds in order to survive. On one side the Russians have invaded and dominated but the German forces are pressing in – but are they Estonia’s answer to their independence? It’s heroic, cruel and tragic but a fascinating insight into a small Baltic nation squeezed between two oppressive invaders and their desperate fight to be the independent nation they so desire.
