Boy Swallows Universe

There was an endorsement on the advanced reading copy that said ‘think of this book as the boy from Wonder meets Copper Reid’... and that was an accurate description! This is Trent Dalton's fi rst book and what a debut! There are some books that stay with you for a long time and this is one... Set in Brisbane in the 1980s, young Eli Bell has a challenging life. His father has long gone, his mother has a new man Lyle, they're both recovering heroin addicts and are now the local drug peddlers. His brother August is mute due to a past trauma but they stick together in life. In amongst it Eli is trying to make sense of life and truly wants to be a 'good man' but he is lacking a few role models in his life. In a dramatic turn of events his mother is sent to jail and this sets Eli on a mission to fi nd a way to break into the Boggo Road Jail on Christmas Day to rescue his mum. This tale involves ambition, dreams and falling in love with the woman of your dreams and Eli is an endearing character. It's graphic, cruel, dark and yet funny but heroic and hopeful too. The profanity included is in context and it is a very confronting read that builds with suspense and drama. It's become one of my top favourite reads this year.
