It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow - and horror. As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling - and how their lives would play out from that point on. For Harry, this is that story at last. With its raw, unflinching honesty, Spare is a landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief. Prince Harry wishes to support British charities with donations from his proceeds from Spare. The Duke of Sussex has donated $1,500,000 to Sentebale, an organisation he founded with Prince Seeiso in their mothers' legacies, which supports vulnerable children and young people in Lesotho and Botswana affected by HIV/AIDS. Prince Harry will also donate to the non-profit organisation WellChild in the amount of £300,000. WellChild, which he has been Royal patron of for fifteen years, makes it possible for children and young people with complex health needs to be cared for at home instead of hospital, wherever possible.

Certainly worth the time and I can recommend it!

Read With Reid - Book Reviewer - January 2023

SPARE by Prince Harry Many will have proclaimed to have read the recent memoir of Prince Harry – many will fudge the words and make grandiose, broad and sweeping statements…but when you have genuinely read Prince Harry’s deeply raw and personal account word for word – cover to cover…you can call their bluff and see through the cobbled-together words and lip-service to add to the world-wide commentary. I took the time to read word for word, cover to cover and can genuinely say that his narrative will sway you in sympathy and all the way back to gall and outrage. You’ll want to toss the book with an ‘argh’ and then you will swing back to a place of empathy. From the start, I found the first few chapters felt like a rambling nonsensical string of an unwell man. It read like a conversational therapy session as ‘Haz’ tries to bring an ordered sense to his vain imaginings. A vulnerable boy who’s life took one of life’s cruel hits in August 1997 and from there he put his mother, Princess Diana on a faultless pedestal. He writes, unbridles with a disdain and cynicism towards buildings and the royal institution he was born into and lacks a graciousness towards his own father and brother. Above all, he leaves his greatest rage for the ‘paps’ – the paparazzi that took his beloved mother’s life… And then the narrative takes a turn – a more logical, thoughtful style emerges as he trains for military service, finds purpose in his duties and roles and creates the Invictus Games. He finds a way to draw sympathy and his voice becomes credible and understandable. Spare is a conflicting memoir but definitely one that I am glad I took the time and have heard ‘his voice’ – this is ultimately what he set out to do…it’s only human to seek to be heard, understood and confront the many injustices experienced. Spare is certainly worth the time and I can recommend it! Sue
